Virtus Daily Blog #16 – The law of diminishing intent

Imagine the world we would live in, imagine your world, if everyone (including you) did the things they set out to. if they actually executed what they intended.

“ I’m going to start at the Gym when I get a little bit fitter ”

“ My new diet will kick off after the weekend, Monday is the day! ”

“ I’ll get started when work quietens down a little bit ”

“ I’ll look for a job when I finish university ”

“ I need to plan and save more before I start my dream business ”

We have all been there. We have a spark of motivation. A desire to make a change. To start something new. To remove a bad habit from our life.

We have an idea, we think of the endless possibilities, we get a burst of energy, excitement and we can’t wait to take action.

Then what happens?

We put it off until Monday. We give ourselves a ‘get out of jail free card’. We handball off ownership to Future Us. Then Monday comes around and we don’t do what we said we would. Come Tuesday, we are a failure, so what’s the point anyway.

This is a bullshit attitude and an even worse outcome.

Welcome to the law of diminishing intent.

As the great Jim Rohn puts it “The longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it. ”Each day that passes, you push that ‘thing’ you wanted to do a little bit further away.

It’s an integrity thing. Do what you said you would do, when you would say you would do it. We are all human (as i’ve said multiple times) we make mistakes. We forget things. We mess up. The important thing is to be accountable to the process. Show up. Do the work. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do it perfectly. You’re imperfect. And you’re doing your best.

As far as I’m concerned. The juice is worth the squeeze. And you’ll find as much juice as you can drink in the doing, not in the saying.

“Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left?

“No,” he responded, “Five. Why? Because there’s a difference between deciding and doing!”

Glen Maxwell

Take action.

Be Amazing.
