Percieve vs Observe

When was the last time you gave a friend or someone close to you some advice?

I could imagine that it probably wasn’t too long ago. We all love dishing advice.

This is, of course, coming from a guy who writes a weekly email, filled with thoughts and my own personal learnings.

I like to think that this is a medium in which I can put out my struggles and discuss the weekly peaks and troughs of life in 2019. But a part of it is undoubtedly giving you (somewhat) unsolicited advice.

The way I look at it, if one of you gain a greater understanding of the world or yourself from my ramblings, we all win. We grow our capacity to give and be the best part of ourselves.

Anyway, that’s not the point of today’s wrap, so let me continue…

We love to give advice, but when it comes to following our own, very rarely do we follow the same way of thinking.

We are much more inclined, to give advice than we are to recieve it, I find it interesting that we are so readily available to dish out the required information when it is going to a friend, family member, or colleague. Yet when the shoe is on the other foot, we shirk away from the situation.

I think I know the reason why, it’s a simple explanation, one that can be easily understood in theory, yet incredibly difficult to live in practice.

When someone needs advice, we are able to observe and respond objectively to the situation that may be presented. We can look at the facts, and elicit a response determined from our observations and rational thought processes.

On the other hand, If we need to follow our own advice, we tend to be too close to the thing to make the ‘correct’ decisions. We perceive what our best option is and react emotionally. Allowing our subjectivity to get the best of us.

Respond vs React. Objective vs Subjective. Observe vs Percieve.

These become choices when we are able to raise our awareness, learn from our mistakes, and become self-actualised individuals.

Like I said, easy vs simple. It’s never both at the same time.

As always, if you’d like to connect, you know where to find me.
