INTERN SPOTLIGHT: KYLE MACKAY

TELL US A BIT (A LOT) MORE ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am a 23-year-old currently completing the last six months of my Bachelor of Exercise & Sport Science at Deakin University, majoring in exercise physiology and strength and conditioning. I’d love to become an exercise physiologist or a strength and conditioning coach post grad (shocker). I have grown up playing a wide range of sports (AFL, basketball, volleyball, athletics, European handball, rugby, badmington, olympic lifting and powerlifting) with Rep Basketball being the predominant one, first at Hampton Park Pioneers, then Keysborough Cougars. Since around the beginning of the pandemic (June 2020) my focus has been solely on powerlifting. I had my first powerlifting meet (local) in April 2021, where i qualified for states. At states I qualified for nationals but had to withdraw a couple weeks prior to the national meet due to injury. My goal is to compete nationally and eventually internationally.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SPEND 12 WEEKS WITH THE VIRTUS FAMILY?
I’m looking to gain more hands-on coaching and programming experience. I also hope to learn from my peers regarding all things exercise!

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

An exercise physiologist and/or Strength and Conditioning Coach.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
The opportunity to be better than yourself yesterday.

WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A PERSON AND A COACH?

I am pretty disciplined when it comes to getting tasks done. I don’t specialize in one area but am knowledgeable across most areas of exercise!

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST STRETCHES AS A PERSON AND A COACH?
I find consistent effective communication a challenge of mine regarding emotions particularly. Sometimes it will be really good, other times really poor.
