MENTORSHIP SPOTLIGHT: JAMES BARNARD

VIRTUS%2BMENTORSHIP

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m 23 years old and I am about to head into my final year of my Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at the Australian Catholic University (ACU). I am a mad cricket fan and I am hoping once I complete my studies and get my weekends back, that I can get back to playing cricket for a side. I am originally from England (born in the city of York to be precise). My parents reside in Mornington, whereas I am currently living just outside the city in an apartment with my girlfriend.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SPEND 12 WEEKS WITH THE VIRTUS FAMILY?

I feel I need to become a more well-rounded individual in many areas, such as developing/building relationships and my confidence around other people, which I feel the team of Virtus Performance can really aid me with. In addition, I feel with the vast array of experience the Virtus Performance team have, they can help me develop my knowledge and ability to vastly grow my skill-set and relationships, which will hold me in good stead for my future career pathway.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

At the moment, I’m leaning towards Exercise Physiologist, but I’m not 100% sure exactly where I am heading.

WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A PERSON AND A COACH?

  • Approachable

  • Organised

  • Hard working

  • Dedicated

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST STRETCHES AS A PERSON AND A COACH?

I feel I have a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge which I have only recently started putting into practice. However, like everything in my life, I struggle a lot with confidence and am not yet confident with the transition from theoretical knowledge into the real thing. I need to gain more confidence in my ability to design programs effectively for individuals and to apply knowledge of anatomy in helping individuals with what they need. Another area I need to improve in is my confidence around people, so that I can engage with and build strong relationships with future clients. It is important that I am able to discuss why I am implementing certain exercises in my client’s program in a concise, clear and easy to understand way.

FAVOURITES –

Book – Lord of the Rings

Movie – Shaun of the Dead/ Rocky (was a real big inspiration for me when I was younger)

Hobby – Cricket

Exercise – Lat Pull Down

Quote –  ‘All I wanna do is go the distance’ – Rocky Balboa
