It may be perception, actually, I’m sure it was perception, but our generation grew up believing whole heartedly that our parents had it all figured out. Even into adolescence and towards adulthood, we looked up to the people in our lives and through the window, assumed that one day, we would descend into adulthood, understanding the mysteries of the universe with such aplomb that our struggles would all make sense.
Wrong. (Cue old mate Coxy)
I definitely believe that our parents generation are not blameless in this whole clusterfuck of a situation we find ourselves in. They definitely perpetuated this belief and continue to feel the need to offer unsolicited advice about our current issues; cue blaming our financial frustrations on smashed avocado and almond lattes.
The world has evolved more in the past 20 years than it did in the previous 200. What got us here, will not get us there. As the world changes we must also change. Unfortunately evolution doesn’t happen as quickly as we’d like. So we are stuck with what we have, let’s make the best of it.
There are many factors, but I believe that this is one of the reasons why so many of our generation (Y) struggle with mental health. Societal pressure to ‘have your shit together’ plan for the future, save for a house, invest, find a partner. So much focus on the perfect life, the infallible future, so much that we miss the boat and forget to enjoy the now. The way of thinking that was right in the last part of the 20th century, is now obsolete.
At the end of the day, nobody has anything figured out, the least of all the delusional individuals that say they do. We are all doing our best to figure this shit out for ourselves. As Rogan remarks, don’t take yourself too seriously.
“If you ever start taking things too seriously, just remember that we are talking monkeys flying through the universe an organic spaceship without a roof.”
// Joe Rogan
Of course the title ‘Our parents were wrong’ is a little misplaced. (Sorry Mum) We were wrong, but we didn’t know any better. But now we do. None of us know what is going on or why we are here, so let’s just have fun with it.
