What you believe ultimately determines who you are, and where you are going. The stories we tell ourselves are about the most important thing we can understand and have control over.
One tact, could be to try to avoid these stories we are telling ourselves, but let me tell you something you already know. You can’t escape the monologue going on in your head. With this fact being clearer than day, you may as well find out how to understand yourself, and shape your beliefs to cultivate your desires.
Mahatma Ghandi, one of the worlds greatest leaders of the 20th century said it best.
Your beliefs become your thoughts
Your thoughts become your words
Your words become your actions
Your actions become your habits
Your habits become your values
Your values become your destiny.
Many things in our world are out of our controllable, actually most things are. One of the few that remain within our locus of control is our ability to alter our internal narrative. The stories we tell ourselves. To do this we must understand that we are not our thoughts. Our consciousness (and subconscious) are far more intricate than the stream of thoughts that cross our mind every minute of every day. Control this, control your beliefs and control your destiny.
